BBC–Merkel says German multicultural society has failed

Attempts to build a multicultural society in Germany have “utterly failed”, Chancellor Angela Merkel says.

In a speech in Potsdam, she said the so-called “multikulti” concept – where people would “live side-by-side” happily – did not work.

Mrs Merkel’s comments come amid recent outpourings of strong anti-immigrant feeling from mainstream politicians.

A recent survey showed that more than 30% of Germans believed Germany was “overrun by foreigners”.

Perhaps this will lead our own elites to finally listen to the more than 80% of Americans when we say loudly…ENOUGH!!! Build the wall, control our borders, and English is the official language of our nation!!! The Germans have finally woken up, the French are waking up, so there is hope. Immigrants are welcome…most welcome, but THEY MUST ASSIMILATE to our culture; not the other way around. If they don’t want to obey our laws, contribute to the general welfare, learn our language and mores, and be willing to defend our nation…well, they just don’t really want to be US Citizens and should be shown the door.

Well a couple of things need to be pointed out.

    1. Islam is not a “part of Germany.” Islam is an alien import into Germany, and an enemy of western culture. It is only possible to co-exist with Islam if it remains small and powerless. If it ever achieves critical mass, Germany will find out just how much Islam is not a “part of Germany.”

Which leads to the second comment.

    2. This is not a failure of “multi-culturalism.” This is a failure of German birthrates. The problem (as everyone knows) is that all those good secularized German citizens of European stock have stopped having children. The “immigration” problem is in fact a demographic problem caused by vastly different birthrates in the two communities. This is an extension of the general repudiation by Germans of their own Christian heritage. Believing nothing in particular, they find it difficult to find reasons to sacrifice for the next generation. They reason (with flawless secular logic) that it is better to spend money and time on themselves now then to spend either on the preparation of future generations. Their own colossal selfishness is the source of their very real dilemma.

It’s too late to do anything about it now. This is just an expression of angst. Nor will Germans start having children, for the private cost is too great when compared with the diffuse public benefit. Perhaps they could re-awaken their Christian heritage? Or perhaps they have been judged, and Islam is the instrument of their judgment.

When does a religion become part of a country? What makes Islam an alien import any more than Christianity? Aren’t all major religions an alien import to Germany? Also, how is Islam an enemy to Western Culture? Aren’t you really trying to say that Islam is an enemy to Christianity? Which I think is a fair statement. The others I’m so sure of. I think I would need a better definition of what you mean by Western Culture?

  4. Sick & Tired of Nuance says:

[blockquote]Also, how is Islam an enemy to Western Culture? [/blockquote]

    Honor killings.
    Wife beating.
    Acid attacks for femake immodesty.
    Women’s right to vote denied.
    Women’s right to drive denied.
Women’s right to work in the public sector denied.
    Women’s right to education denied.
Women’s right to not wear a veil or burhka denied.
Women forced to walk 5 paces behind men (institutional misogyny).
    Stoning/beheading capital punishment.
    Amputations for theft.
Riots and arson in countries around the world for a cartoon in another country.
Riots for the threat of burning a book.
The elevation of a pedophile as a religious leader (Mohammed consumated a marriage with a 9 year old girl.)
    Bigamy.
    Jihad.

I am sure there are other areas where Islam is an enemy to Western Culture, but I think I made the point.

    #4,

I agree. Muslims believe Mohammed was the most perfect man who
ever lived. Yet, at about the age of 50, he married a 9-year old girl,
and did indeed consummate that marriage. To my mind, that is sick,
twisted, and evil. Totally abhorrent behavior.

  6. MCPLAW says:

#4 I think we as Christians need to be specific, if we want to make valid points. Much of Western Culture can be traced to pre-Christian Rome and Greece. In fact much of Western Culture was recovered during the Renaissance from Muslim scholars. For example most of our math and science we obtained from the Arabs who obtained their knowledge from the Greeks and even further back from the Egyptians. These were lost to us during Europe’s dark ages and recovered from Muslim scholars during the Renaissance.

Almost all of the things you accuse Muslims of occurred in the West until very recently and worse; unless by Western Culture you mean western culture as it has existed for the last 50 years. But what about the previous 2000. When attacking another religion, we as Christians must be careful not to throw stones when we live in a glass house. Many people are evil. All religions have periods in their history when people we would consider evil were in control. We have to focus on the positives of our religion, not the negatives of other religions. To say Christianity and Islam are at odds is true. To say that we believe Muslims worship a false god, is true. To say that we believe the teachings of Islam lead militants to act in ways Christians believe unacceptable and dangerous is true. But to accuse Muslims of historically being more brutal than “Westerners” or to get into a tit for tat as to who has committed more evil acts in the name of their religion, may be somewhere we do not want to go, as surely you know similiar things are common in the history of most religions including Christianity.

#5 While by contemporary standards we consider this pedophilia, historically, women were deemed ready for sex at puberty and not at a specific age. In the Middle ages, the church allowed marriage at 14 for a boy and 12 for a girl. I believe under traditional Jewish law marriage is allowed at 13 for a boy and 12 for a girl. In the US, some states allowed marriage at age 12 until very recently and even today one state allows marriage at 13 under specific circumstances. I consider sex with a 12 year old pedophilia, but for most of Western History that was not the case.

  7. Sick & Tired of Nuance says:

#6 Contemporary Western culture is what we are talking about. We do not live 4 centuries ago, we live now. Islam is an alien culture and political movement invading contemporary Western societies and it is not compatible. We have moved on since the 12th century. Islam has not.

BTW, 9 is not 12 (and 12 is still way too young) and a 50 year old “consumating” a marriage with a 9 year old is sick and it is pedophilia. No sophistry will change that fact. Mohammed was a pedophile.

  8. robroy says:

Reality #1: Many European countries are heading for Muslim majorities. This will be the case in France in 40 years.

Reality #2: In countries with Muslim majorities, democracy is very either a sham or on its last legs.

From a recent article on Geert Wilders:
[blockquote] At present, overwhelming Muslim majorities — i.e., better than two-thirds (see the weighted average calculated here) of a well-conducted survey of the world’s most significant and populous Arab and non-Arab Muslim countries — want these immoderate outcomes: “strict application” of Shari’a, Islamic Law, and a global Caliphate. Specifically, the World Public Opinion.org/ University of Maryland poll (released February 25, 2009) indicated the following about our putative Muslim ally nations of Egypt and Pakistan: 81% of the Muslims of “moderate” Egypt, the largest Arab Muslim nation, desire a “strict” application of Shari’a, Islamic Law; 76% of the Pakistan’s Muslims — one of the most important and sizable non-Arab Muslim populations — also want this outcome. Furthermore, 70% of Egyptian Muslims and 69% of Pakistani Muslims desire the recreation of a “single Islamic state or Caliphate.” Elsewhere, I have detailed the totalitarian impact of these fulfilled Islamic desires based upon their doctrinal and historical application, across space and time.[/blockquote]
So religious theocracy is the norm for majority Muslim countries. In some sense, the analogy between the Medina Mohammed and the Mecca Muslim carries on today. When Muslims are minorities, it is a religion of tolerance. When in majority, sharia is the norm – cutting off hands, stoning for adultery, etc.

Why aren’t real liberals fighting Islam creep? Are there any who do?

While I’m amused by carl’s #2, I’m inclined to take PM Merkel’s statement at face value, and to see it as an important wake-up call for western leaders. For too long, “multi-culturalism” has been treated as a sacred cow, as if that lofty social aspiration were inviolable or unquestionable. But as Methodist church growth guru William Easum wisely says, “[i]Sacred cows make gourmet hamburgers[/i].”

Personally, I find it quite significant that Mrs. Merkel is finally daring to say publicly what many of us political nobodies have long known, that “the Emperor has no clothes.”

As a political ideology, “multi-culturalism” is as bankrupt as Communism. I just hope it doesn’t take western societies 70 years to realize it.
